First of all, what is bilirubin?

Bilirubin is a yellow-orange pigment found in the liver. Bilirubin, which is obtained by the breakdown of red blood cells, is thrown out of the body mostly through feces. For this, adequate nutrition and defecation are required.

While the baby is in the womb, it has a different red blood cell structure, after birth, the red blood cells try to become adults. The destruction of baby red blood cells takes place in the liver, while red blood cells are divided into two as iron and bilirubin, iron is stored for use, and bilirubin is sent to the gallbladder to be excreted.

How is bilirubin excreted?

Bilirubin sent to the bile is sent to the intestines as a result of the baby's sucking and is thrown out of the body. Sometimes the bilirubin mixed with the blood can be excreted from the body through urine. Bilirubin passing into the blood causes babies to look slightly yellow-orange, but this is nothing serious and should disappear within 48-72 hours.

When is bilirubin serious?

Jaundice lasting more than 48-72 hours may indicate that the baby is not fed enough, that there is a problem with urination or defecation, and that the difference in the blood groups of the mother and baby affects the baby. Light (photon) therapy can be given to the baby whose bilirubin level is checked with the help of blood tests or new devices.

What is Photon Therapy?

Since it is known that sunlight helps to remove bilirubin from the body, babies have been put to sleep in places that receive sunlight, but as a result of the serious condition of some babies, machines that mimic the Sun have emerged. Excess bilirubin in the baby's body is tried to be removed with the beam given in the hospital environment.

While receiving treatment:

* By moving the baby as much as possible, it should be ensured that the beam reaches his whole body,
* It should be done in the specified amounts in a short time to prevent the delicate skin from drying out,
* Moisturize the baby's skin,
* Special attention should be paid to nutrition during treatment.
