NOSE CONSTRUCTION AND CLEANING IN BABIES.jpeg

Nasal Snot and Cleaning in Babies

Babies cannot burp and clear their noses of mucus, their nasal passages are narrower than adults and older children. For this reason, one of the most common problems in infants is nasal congestion and breathing difficulty that develops accordingly.

The baby should breathe through the nose while the nipple is in the mouth. This is why the suction is impaired when the nose is closed. Babies breathe through their nose in the first months, and because they cannot breathe through their mouths, they inevitably encounter problems such as sleep problems and restlessness. Because they can't sleep, they wake up frequently and because they can't go to deep sleep, they can't rest, their appetite is cut even more. Throat and lower respiratory tract infections are more common in babies and children with closed noses.

How to clean the nose of babies daily?

A healthy baby does not need routine cleaning. The water that enters the nose while bathing softens the mucus in the nose and allows it to be expelled. After the bath, these dirt can be removed with the help of a soft tissue paper, cheesecloth or nasal aspirators.

In healthy babies, these procedures are sufficient. However, if the baby has a noise from his nose while breathing, if there is a problem in falling asleep, if his sleep is often interrupted while he is sleeping, if the mother leaves the breast and cries while breastfeeding, nasal cleaning should be done.

Sterile, salt content compatible with the body in 5 ml plastic bottles, known as ocean water or sea water available in pharmacies for nasal cleaning in babies with blocked nose, or 100 ml sterile salt water called "isotonic" that you can buy from pharmacies and 5 ml syringes should be used. High-pressure sprays, sprays containing drugs, and salt water prepared at home should never be used for nasal cleaning in babies in the first 6 months.

There are 2 recommended methods for cleaning the nose.

1- after dripping ocean water or isotonic into the nostril, aspirating.

2- After squeezing the ocean water or isotonic into the nostril, turn the baby upside down (face down) while holding the baby with one hand, with the other hand gently hitting the baby's back for 1 minute, causing the water given into the nose to flow together with the discharge and dirt in the nose. to ensure.

I recommend the second method, which I find more effective, to mothers. In both methods, it is not a problem for your baby to get water into his/her eyes and ears while dripping or squeezing water into his/her nose.

A doctor should definitely be consulted when babies have nasal congestion, especially in the first 3 months of age. Since the diseases can progress rapidly in the first 3 months of age, the doctor may call the baby for examinations daily or every other day. Do what your doctor says and do not miss the doctor's checks.
