Benefits of Breastfeeding
For the Infant
- Strengthens the immune system and reduces the risk of infections.
- Easily digestible; gastrointestinal problems such as gas and constipation are less common.
- Contains essential fatty acids such as DHA and ARA, which support brain development.
- May reduce the risk of obesity, type 1 and type 2 diabetes, allergies, and asthma later in life.
- Supports healthy oral and jaw development, contributing to proper speech and dental health.
- Enhances emotional security through close physical contact with the mother.
For the Mother
- Promotes uterine involution through the release of oxytocin.
- Reduces postpartum bleeding.
- Lowers the risk of breast and ovarian cancers.
- Contributes to natural postpartum weight loss.
- Reduces stress and may decrease the risk of postpartum depression.
- Strengthens the mother–infant bond.
- Is practical, hygienic, and cost-effective.
Frequency of Breastfeeding
- Newborns are typically breastfed every 2–3 hours, amounting to 8–12 feedings per day.
- Feeding based on the infant’s hunger cues (such as rooting and sucking movements) is recommended.
Proper Breastfeeding Position
- The infant’s head and body should be aligned in a straight line.
- The infant should latch onto not only the nipple but also a large portion of the areola.
- The mother should be in a comfortable and well-supported position.
Common Challenges
- Nipple pain or cracking: Often caused by improper latch.
- Gas and regurgitation: Burping the infant after feeding may be beneficial.
- Milk supply: Frequent and effective breastfeeding helps increase milk production.
