Parents are most afraid of high fever in their babies. However, fever means that the body's immune system is working, and therefore, during fever in infants, it is necessary to go to the nearest health institution without panic and investigate the cause of the fever. Baby and Pediatrician Specialists gave information about fever and the method of fighting fever in infants.

What Is Fever in Babies?

Body temperature must be within certain limits for organ systems to function properly. The place that controls body temperature; The part of the brain called the hypothalamus. Normal body temperature in humans is 36.5 degrees. An increase in body temperature above normal limits is defined as fever. Fever is a biological response of the body to an infection that has entered the body. Along with fever, the immune system starts to fight the infecting micro-organisms that enter the body. In this sense, fever is one of the body's defense mechanisms. However, it is necessary to reduce the fever after a certain limit in order to relieve the child's discomfort, weakness and exhaustion caused by fever, and to prevent febrile seizures, which is one of the most feared situations of families. This temperature changes according to the time of day. When this temperature rises, the elements of the immune system are activated. At this point, the immune system fights microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria, parasites or fungi that cause infection. In other words, fever is a healthy response of the body. It should be known that fever is beneficial to the body. However, it should not be forgotten that a fever of 38 degrees and above is important.

What are the symptoms of fever in babies? How to detect fever in a baby?

Symptoms of fever in infants in general terms:

Development of fatigue
Disruption in sleep patterns
Decreased nutrition
Decreased interest in the game
The palm feels warmer than normal when the baby or child's skin is touched.

What are the causes of fever in a baby?

Fever is not a disease - it is considered a symptom. Fever usually means that the body is fighting an illness and the immune system is working. If your baby has a fever, in most cases, he or she has probably caught a cold or another viral infection. Although less common in infants, a more serious infection such as pneumonia, urinary tract infections, ear infections or a blood bacterial infection or meningitis can cause a fever.

fever in infants; It can also be other than infections. The main reason is mild and short-term fever and teething periods. In addition, it is normal to have a short-term fever after vaccination with certain vaccines. Dressing too thickly or being overheated by spending too much time outside on a hot day will also cause your body temperature to be higher than normal.

How is fever measured in a baby?

While measuring body temperature, together with technological developments, thermometers that work with different methods and measure from different places can be used. Temperature can be measured from the mouth, forehead, ear canal, armpit and rectum. For these measurements, measurements can be made with mercury-glass, electronic, digital, transmembrane and thermal camera. Thermometers to be preferred for measurements should measure accurately and quickly, not interact with the ambient temperature, and be reliable. Types of fever measurement:

1- Oral temperature measurement: Before the measurement, the mercury thermometer should be shaken until the mercury level drops below 36 °C. In digital thermometers, after pressing the on button, the screen display showing that it is ready for measurement should be waited. The thermometer is placed on the inside of the cheek inside the mouth. The mercury thermometer is held in the mouth for 3 minutes and the digital thermometer until the beep sounds. The measured value on the display is read. Intraoral measurement should not be preferred when possible, as they may bite the thermometer and harm themselves in unconscious patients and small children.

2- Temperature measurement under the armpit: After the armpit is dried, the thermometer should be placed. In mercury thermometers, the thermometer residence time is 5 minutes, and in digital thermometers, until the beep is heard. It is easy and safe.

3- Temperature measurement from the ear canal: The tympanic membrane is the eardrum. Since the veins that provide blood supply to the body's heat center are close to this region, it is the ideal region for measuring body temperature. It is not recommended to measure from the ear in patients with ear secretion plugs and in patients with external auditory canal trauma.

4- Rectal temperature measurement: Temperature measurement from this area is usually performed with mercury glass thermometers. It is waited for 3 minutes for measurement with mercury glass thermometers. Considering that the thermometer may break during the procedure and cause rectal injuries, it is not recommended for newborn babies and small children. In addition, this method should not be measured in patients who develop diarrhea, in patients with impaired immune systems, and in patients who have undergone surgery in this area.
If the temperature is above 38 degrees in the mouth, ear canal or armpit measurements and if the temperature is above 38.5 degrees in the rectal measurement, the child has a fever.

Over time, experienced mothers can predict whether they have a fever by resting their lips on their children's foreheads when the thermometronine is not available for the moment.

Is fire dangerous?

If the baby is less than 3 months old and has a fever, it may mean an emergency. Important criteria are whether the baby is active, whether he has difficulty in breathing or eating, whether he is very cranky, whether there is a rash on his body. If the baby is unresponsive, has trouble breathing, is very cranky, has a rash or rash on the body, wets less diapers, has no tears when crying, or has had a seizure, then a fever is considered an emergency and this is a dangerous situation. In such cases, the nearest health institution and pediatrician should be consulted.

Especially in infants and infants, it may not be possible to determine the cause of fever only by listening to the complaints about the disease told by the parents and examining the baby. For this reason, doctors will sometimes order special tests (blood or urine tests and additional tests) to pinpoint the cause of the baby's fever.

What should I do if my baby has a fever?

If your baby is less than 3 months old and has a fever, contact your child's doctor immediately. Try these tips for older babies:

1- Wash your child with warm water. Always check the temperature of the water on your wrist before bathing your baby.

2- Dress your baby in a light layer of clothing.

3- With fever, the body's need for water increases. Give your baby enough fluids to prevent dehydration. In addition to water, these liquids can be breast milk, formula, electrolyte solution that can be taken with the recommendation of a physician, depending on the age of the baby. A dehydrated baby may have fewer wet diapers, no tears when crying, or a dry mouth.
When children have fever; In general, drugs containing "paracetamol" or "ibuprofen" are used. The concentrations of "paracetamol" or "ibuprofen" available in a scale in the drugs released by different pharmaceutical companies may differ from each other. Antipyretic drugs with different contents are given in different doses according to the age or month of the children and also according to their weight. For this reason, in case of fever, the type and amount of medication to be used should be consulted with the doctor.

How does a fever decrease in a baby? How to lower baby's fever?

In newborn babies, fever in the first month may be due to infection, or it may be due to another reason such as lack of nutrition and dehydration of the body. Whatever the cause, fever in newborn babies is dangerous. It is necessary to consult a doctor immediately, without wasting time. At the same time, the same sensitivity should be shown in other babies who are 3 months old and below. In this age group, time should not be lost in life-threatening infections and the hospital should be consulted immediately. In children older than 3 months of age, fever can be provided with physical warm application or with medications in doses that your pediatrician will give in line with your child's weight. Warm application can be done by placing the child in a bath tub full of warm water up to his waist, instead of forcing the child to take a shower, and if he is not very weak due to fever, throwing his toys into it and keeping him in the water for 15-20 minutes. At this time, it is appropriate to repeatedly run the water over the shoulders with a mug or sponge. If you pour water over your head, it will be sufficient to apply warm water from the shoulders, as you may cry and want to get out of the water.

It is necessary to apply to a health institution for examination as soon as possible, even if the fever does not decrease after the medications you give by making a warm application and contacting your doctor, in order to determine the cause of the fever and to treat the main disease factor.
