The importance of sleep for the physiological and psychological development of individuals has been proven by scientific facts. Although it varies depending on gender, age and social activity, an average of 8 to 10 hours of sleep is considered healthy for an adult.

For babies, this period is between 14 and 18 hours on average. Sleep, which positively affects growth and development, is an element that needs to be taken into consideration at every moment of life, and is especially important during newborn, infancy and childhood.

Why Don't Babies Sleep?

Reasons why babies don't sleep: It has been explained by experts in the field that there are physiological, environmental factors and psychological factors. Physiological reasons; Situations such as teething, gas problem, any disease, and hunger may be shown.

Environmental factors are cited as reasons such as insufficient room temperature, insufficient floor maintenance, and incorrect room lighting levels.

Psychologically, the tensions experienced by parents and at home are reflected on the baby and the bond between mother and child is not at a sufficient level.

How to Put Babies to Sleep?

Many suggestions have been given by experts to encourage babies to sleep and to keep their sleep time at an adequate level. These methods can be listed as follows;

- Babies should be put to sleep in a quiet and quiet environment.
- The baby should be ensured to sleep at room temperature that does not cause sweating or cold.
- It should be ensured that the baby's diaper is complete and clean.
- The bond between mother and child needs to be strengthened.
- In case of teething or any illness, a specialist physician should be contacted as soon as possible.
- Bathing the baby before sleep helps the baby relax and make it easier to fall asleep.
- Massaging the baby's body with suitable baby care oil prolongs sleep time.

Daytime Sleep in Babies

It is known that resting moments are important for normal adults, and the same is true for newborns, babies and children. Although it varies depending on age group, a newborn baby sleeps and wakes up intermittently, day and night.

During infancy, as the development progresses month by month, the duration of night sleep increases and the duration of daytime sleep decreases compared to the newborn. Children over the age of 3 who receive sleep training receive adult-level rest during the day and uninterrupted sleep at night.

What is Night Feeding in Babies?

A newborn baby should be fed with breast milk or formula, depending on the situation, at 2-hour intervals. This period is extended for babies who develop monthly, and it can be stopped after the 6th month, in consultation with a specialist, depending on the baby's development. Hunger status should not be questioned every time the baby wakes up and cries, and other options should be reviewed.
