Enuresis, known as urinary incontinence and bedwetting, is defined as the day or night urinary incontinence of children, wetting their bed and clothes. If a child over the age of 5 does not have an acquired or congenital nervous system problem, it can be said that enuresis may occur if urinary incontinence occurs at least twice a week for more than three months.

What are the Causes of Urinary Incontinence?

Experts warn that there may be many reasons for urinary incontinence due to psychological problems and genetics, and these reasons should be investigated.

Genetic Causes

Genetic factors play an important role in bedwetting. If there is no enuresis in the family, the probability of having this disorder in the child is 10-15%, while if one parent has enuresis, this probability increases to 44%, and if both parents have enuresis, this probability increases to 77%.

Bladder Related Causes

The bladder is known as one of the last stops in the urinary tract. The urine stored in the bladder pushes the person to search for the toilet by sending a signal from the stretched bladder. The muscle, which is normally loose in the bladder wall, contracts and discharges urine. In children with enuresis who are resistant to treatment, the bladder volume is small, so it fills up quickly. The bladder muscle may contract by will and may cause urination before the bladder is completely filled, causing urinary incontinence at night.

The relationship of urinary incontinence with sleep

The information received from the families of children with urinary incontinence is that the children's sleep is quite deep and they have difficulty in waking up. There are studies to support this, but no direct causal relationship has been found. Although it is known in the studies that urinary incontinence is more common in the early stages of sleep, it has been observed that children who urinate frequently can wet the bed during the night.

Hormonal Factors in Urinary Incontinence

Avp hormone is known as a hormone that is secreted in the body at night and reduces the production of urine. If there is a problem in the functioning of this hormone, nighttime urine production may increase and cause urinary incontinence. For this reason, the child may leak urine at night.
